Bombay Style Breakfast Kababs

Our weekday breakfast is the usual cereal, toast, eggs. Because who has the time to cook something fancy in the morning? Ummm not me! But weekend breakfast holds a very special place in our heart. On Saturday’s Mr. Mint Thief happily takes over the kitchen & treats me to amazing breakfast like poha (flattened rice) , grilled sandwiches, pancakes etc. Sunday’s it’s our cooking together day, spending quality time with each other making breakfast. It is just the two of us in the kitchen with no distractions of cell phones, work, etc. It is way more fun and worthwhile to me to cook a meal at home with my spouse because there is so much more interaction and it is more of a bonding experience. This succulent kababs was our last weekend brunch which we made together.

These Bombay Style Breakfast Kababs; are classic breakfast comfort food & a family favorite. My husband’s favorite to be precise…my mom-in-law handed down the recipe soon after our marriage and I have been making this ever since.
These  kababs are made with minced mutton and mixed together with  few  aromatic spices, egg, fresh herbs & grated onions. They are deep fried to perfection. The flavors of these kababs are lip-smacking and at the same time, they are simple and subtle!

It is actually also a very popular street food found in Bohri Mohalla (South Mumbai), eaten with special kind of bread called ‘lamba pav’. It’s juicy, spicy, crispy and very delicious! These kababs made an appearance to our breakfast table almost every Sunday morning when I lived with my parents.

This can be served not only for breakfast but also as a tea time snack. It also fits in as an appetizer for a meal. This kabab would guarantee you to win accolades from guests once you serve them hot.


Here’s how you can make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground mutton or beef
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 egg
  • 2 onions, grated & squeezed out all water
  • 5 ground chili to paste
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp whole wheat flour
  • 3 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • 3 tbsp chopped mint
  • salt to taste
  • oil for deep frying

Method:

  • In a bowl, add ground meat, ginger paste & salt, mix very well. Cover and keep it aside for 1 hour or overnight.

  • Whenever ready to make kababs. Grate 2 onions in a food processor or using a hand grater. Squeeze out all the water from onions using a cheese cloth. The onions should not have any moisture. keep aside.

  • Add, green chilies, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, egg, coriander leaves, mint leaves, black pepper, grated onion & flour. Mix everything very well into the ground meat.

  • Divide the kebab mixture into equal lemon sized balls. Repeat the same for all the balls.
  • In a heavy flat bottom pan, heat oil. Deep fry the kebabs on a medium heat until brown and it is cooked well.
  • Take it out on a serving dish, garnish with onion rings, mint, and lemon.

      1. In India we usually make these kababs with ground mutton so they come out perfectly cooked .. But if you are using beef you can add 1 heaping tablespoon of raw papaya paste along with ginger & salt. That should tenderize the meat & will cook perfectly . I would suggest not boiling the meat before for this recipe. The texture & juiciness of the kababs won’t be the same.

      2. Offcou…. Even me from India…..if I guess you from Mumbai, then me from Poona….. And now days here to get good beef is not very easy….. Let me try once and see…..

      3. Yeah I’m from Mumbai.. But living in United States.. I know with the ban on beef it’s probably difficult to find good quality of meat.. Try it with ground mutton & let me know how it turns out! 😊
